Dating in the UK

24 December, 2007 (00:00) | By: janey

As with many things, the UK dating scene has been going through a renovation period where old tried, tested — and often rejected — ways of finding a date are being replaced through the advancement of technology and in particular the Internet. What were once deemed to be ’sad’ ways of meeting a potential partner are now common among people of all ages.

Take a look in any personals column and you’ll find everything from young professionals to retired widowers looking for friendship and romance. The personals column are no longer thought to be the last hope of the desperate few are now a socially acceptable way of finding like-minded people to date.

The Internet is of course the biggest revolutionary tool for dating. Once restricted to their own part of the UK, anyone with a spirit of adventure or even just the smallest amount of curiosity, plus access to the Internet can find themselves meeting other people looking for a dating experience throughout the country (not to mention the world!).

Speed dating is another trend that has been embraced in the UK with bars and pubs in particular offering speed dating nights as part of their social calendar. Whether or not a real connection can be made in such a short period of time is open to question, but what it does allow is a number of “first impressions” to be made in one evening with the possibility of getting to know the people that seem compatible at a later date.

In line with many countries worldwide, the UK dating scene is enlarging not just because of an increasing population but also because of a trend not to settle down so early in life. The younger generation is primarily on the dating field as part of their social culture, whereas the once “settling down” 20’s are now there more to just meet with people in general rather than finding a partner.

The 30-somethings are now the age group who are more likely to be looking for a serious relationship from their dating experiences as they have a career settled and are now looking to turn their attention to their home life. At one time the more mature 40s, 50s, 60s (and even older) wouldn’t have dreamed of entering the dating arena, but in a society where divorce statistics are high, it’s not unusual anymore to find a significant number of people who are looking for love the second time around looking for a compatible date.

When it comes to ways of meeting people, the UK dating scene isn’t really different to many other countries. There are some cultures within the UK where their religion dictates a certain behavior and tradition when it comes to dating rules, but for the most part, dating is now a diverse activity that’s more relaxed than it was in past decades.
